Why I Do This

A native to Pittsburgh, I have seen this city undergo many changes, from the decline of the steel industry to the rise of the Steelers to the destruction and construction of buildings to the development of new highways like I-279.  And while I grew up in the North Hills, I remember taking trips to Bloomfield for dinner at Del's, frequenting the public swimming pool in Etna, walking downtown with my parents to the YWCA for summer day care and swimming lessons, and shopping in the Strip District with my mother.  I didn't realize it then, but these experiences helped shape me and my respect for the connections in neighborhoods.

One of my favorite quotes is by John Muir: "When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe."  It seems that the Earth has a funny way of connecting systems together in biology, geology, ecology; I learned about the environmental damage from greenfield development (increased runoff, more roads, more driving, more pollution) and I began to realize how important central places are to our future.  I want to help combat sprawl in order to preserve green spaces and stop the development of cookie cutter big boxes surrounded by seas of parking.  I am grateful to have found so many others in Pittsburgh and our region that feel the same way, and look forward to reaching out to even more to improve our central city and change our bad habits.
